Hyperhidrosis Treatment Glasgow
At the La Preme Clinic, we are now fully trained to treat hyperhidrosis and help you take back control of your life.
What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which your body will sweat excessively, even when your body doesn’t require heat regulation. This condition can affect various body parts, such as the palms of your hands, feet, underarms or face.
There are two variations of hyperhidrosis that can occur within the body; these are categorised as primary and secondary.
- Primary Hyperhidrosis: This form of hyperhidrosis will have been present for most of your life, often beginning in your early teens. The cause of this form of hyperhidrosis isn’t known; however, we do know it is a result of overactive sweat glands.
- Secondary Hyperhidrosis: Secondary hyperhidrosis will often begin later in life and could result from an underlying medical condition, medication you are taking, hormone imbalances or neurological disorders. With secondary hyperhidrosis, you may find that you sweat much more in your sleep.
Using Botox to Treat Hyperhidrosis
As mentioned previously, Botox is a safe, fast and effective treatment for hyperhidrosis and is the form of treatment used here at our La Preme Clinic.
The procedure involves multiple small injections of Botox into the worst affected areas of your body to prevent the release of the acetylcholine chemical that stimulates your sweat glands. Botox will be administered by a fully trained and qualified professional and is usually well-accepted by the body. It is a quick and relatively painless solution to hyperhidrosis.
The effects of the Botox can last for several months, depending on the severity of your condition; however, after a couple of months, you may notice that the sweating has returned. Repeat injections are needed to maintain desired results.
Overall, Botox can provide significant relief for those who have hyperhidrosis. If you feel like botox injections could be the right form of treatment for you, or you’d like some more information from a healthcare professional, contact us using the button below.
What are the treatment options for hyperhidrosis?
There is more than one available treatment option available for hyperhidrosis; however, some are much more invasive than others. These treatment options include:
- Antiperspirants – This one may seem obvious, but antiperspirants can be an effective treatment option for mild cases of hyperhidrosis. Antiperspirants are topical products that contain aluminium salts that are able to temporarily block the sweat ducts of your body, reducing sweat production and helping you keep hyperhidrosis at bay.
- Medications – Anticholinergics are oral medications that can be prescribed to treat hyperhidrosis and prevent excess sweating at the source. They work by blocking the acetylcholine signal within your brain and thereby reduce sweat gland activity; however, many people do not like these as they can have some adverse side effects.
- Botox Injections – Botox or Botulinum toxin can also be used to treat hyperhidrosis. By injecting small amounts of Botox into the worst affected areas of your body, the release of acetylcholine is blocked in these areas, and thus sweating is greatly reduced. This is, however, not a permanent solution and will require periodic retreatment.
- Surgical Sweat Gland Removal – Severe cases of hyperhidrosis will sometimes be treated using surgical measures in which sympathectomy is performed. This means that the nerves that control the sweating will be cut or clamped. This form of treatment is typically only offered as a very last resort due to its invasive nature and potential risks.
When deciding which form of treatment will be best for you, several things should be taken into account. These include the severity and location of your hyperhidrosis, your preferences and the advice of your healthcare professional.
